sleepy pie derby time

I love when Derby is all sleepy and relaxed and I catch him with the tippy tip tip of his tonuge pointing out.

He loves Puppy Baby - a gift from Uncle Wayne.

so sweet...

My Aunt Linda sent Derby a get well card. How sweet is that?

#9. scratch that.

So, just yesterday I mentioned in my Ten on Tuesday that I would like to do some agility course training with my dog, Derby Pie. Well, we can now officially cross that one off the list.

Sometimes Derby seems to be a bit of an anxious boy. Whenever I’m getting ready to leave the house – even an hour before I leave – he begins quivering and quaking. He knows. He also does this whenever we get in the car to go to the groomer’s. I’m telling ya, he knows. He also does this when he’s about to get a bath at home. And, he does this when he knows the garage door is open and someone is about to come into the house.

But today I realized Derby had been shaking most of the morning and just didn’t seem to feel well. Even when he was lying down and seemed to be resting he was shaking. He didn’t seem feverish or lethargic and he still had an appetite. But he just didn’t seem to feel well. I called the Vet’s office and got an appointment for the afternoon.

The Vet seems to think Derby has (are you ready for this?) a bulging disc that is impinging a nerve.

I! KNOW!

Like mother like son.

I have already discovered that it is extremely difficult to keep a two ½ year old cocker spaniel down. I am supposed to be keeping him from jumping off of beds, couches, chairs, stairs, et cetera. But the whole reason I wanted to do those agility classes is because Derby is such a good jumper and really seems to enjoy it!

Derby had a few shots at the Vet’s office – some anti-inflammatory and some pain meds. We were also sent home with about two weeks worth of Prednisone. He is markedly better already. But he has to take it easy for awhile and that is going to be the tough part. Don't let the Sleepy Pie photos fool ya.

migraine monday.

When I woke up this morning I immediately knew it was going to be a day to stay in bed. I had a migraine yesterday that ebbed and flowed with the thunderstorms that moved through most of the afternoon. A lack of a good night's sleep is my #1 migraine trigger. Between the (stupid) time change and feeling hot and restless the last couple of nights I knew I needed some extra sleep. That familiar fuzzy, fiery, achy feeling was smoldering just behind my eyes when I first opened them this morning. I took Derby out, called into work, and then climbed back in bed for a long winter/spring nap. After sleeping and resting most of the day I started to feel much much better.Oh, and I forgot to mention that I kind of fell yesterday.

Not a big fall.

The same step in the garage that I fell off of in November was involved.

Nothing was fractured or sprained this time. I mostly landed on my butt pretty hard. And I really just mostly scared the bat snot out of myself. I felt pretty sore last night and most of the morning. But I don’t think I did any real damage. My floppy foot just gets a little confused sometimes.

Late this afternoon I decided Derby and I would both benefit from some fresh air and Vitamin D sunshine. So we loaded up in the new Honda and headed to the Bark Park. I really like being able to put Derby in the “trunk” of the CRV. He has a pretty hard time getting over the back seat - which means he’s less likely to make it into my lap while I’m driving. And I think he gets less anxious back there.

The weather was gorgeous today and the dog park was lousy with dogs of all sizes. We ran into my friends from church, Paul and Brandi, and I finally got to meet their dog, Kai. While the dogs ran around we were able to visit. Well, visit as much as we could with a few dozen dogs running around us.At the dog park I left my cane in the car. And by the time Derby and I got to the small gate I was already tired. I just kept telling myself the walking was good for me. But it certainly wore me out. Derby and I should sleep well tonight.

...on a Saturday morning we drove to Muhlenberg County.
I saw this baby boy. I said, "That's the one. "
We put him in the car.
We brought him home.
And put him under the tree.

a progress report

The second piece of Derby’s dog bed is complete! Last night I cast on the third and final piece. It’s not even finished and he’s already chewing on it.

nap-py headed

Evidently getting groomed (or fighting with a groomer?) takes a lot out of a boy.

baby's first haircut

I really love living in the South. Expect for during July and August. And sometimes June. It has been so hot and humid and I knew I had to do something about the mass of curls and waves of furry sweetness that covered Derby's back. He went for his first haircut yesterday. I left him with the groomer for a few hours. I had a requested a classic cocker cut-or as LYLASarah calls it, "a dog mullet". When I returned to the groomer's and Derby came running down the hall I thought, "that's not my dog". He looks so different! And at first I was wondering what I had done to my baby. But I'm growing accustomed to it and I know he feels so much cooler. He looks like a big boy cocker spaniel now. And kind of like Falkor from The Neverending Story.

picture pages, picture pages, lots of fun with picture pages

I don’t know why this Indianapolis Motor Speedway employee was sitting outside of the gift shop “grille” wearing goggles. But I like it. I took Derby and the Huskybutts to the dog park yesterday. Memphis and Keyara showed up like the cool kids who run things. “Hey, we’re here and we’re marking the whole park because it is OURS. Got it? You all are so un-cool. Hey, you! Pit Bull, yeah you. You’re not as awesome as you think. Yeah, that little chocolate cocker spaniel kid is our cousin. Yes, he does embarrass us sometimes. You wanna make something of it? I didn’t think so. We’re outta here.”I think they may have run all the way to the other end of the field because they knew Derby couldn’t keep up. He tried. He really did. However, around the half-way mark he gave up, turned around, and headed back in my direction. Another time he ran after them with all his might. But his front legs gave out and he landed on his chin. He was fine. It was funny. Memphis and Keyara pointed and laughed.

get along little doggy

This first photo was intended to be part of the post, Welcome Back Derby. But there were some camera to computer connectivity issues. My mom indicated that she didn’t like the idea of Derby having his picture made in this e-collar get-up and then having such photos posted on the internet. So, don’t tell her they are here.He really is being such a brave little boy. I’ve been so impressed with him. I know wearing this collar is not a comfortable thing and he does not like it. Yet he has not whined or pouted or seemed grouchy about it. He’s just dealing. There was a moment yesterday when I regretted the whole thing. When he looked up at me with his head poking through that collar and I could see in his eyes that he’s feeling tired and cooped up. I wished that I could take it all back. I just wanted him to be able to relax as usual and run and jump and play and clean himself as he likes.Last night I had planned to let Derby sleep on the floor of my bedroom thinking he would be unable to jump onto my bed with that lampshade around his neck-considering that he’s still mastering even getting up onto my bed on the first try. I made him two pallets on the floor and brought in plenty of toys. I got him all set up. But as I lay in bed reading Blue Like Jazz a furry little head popped up, followed by a body, that lay down beside me. He stayed on the bed all night, lying close to me, which I found comforting and I’m sure he did, too. During the night I awoke and took the collar off for a few minutes to give him a breather. After I had removed it he began to lick my hand as if to say, “thank you”.

I know this will be over soon. In nine days he’ll have his stitches removed and we can get back to normal. In the meantime, I am trying to focus on the positives. He is a healthier pup without a hernia. We can anticipate his life expectancy and quality of life to be increased by being neutered. He should be a well tempered young man. And, thankfully, the vet trimmed his nails really short and cleaned out his ears while he was sleeping. Wearing the e-collar does not seem to make his grouchy. But grooming does.

welcome back derby

Derby is home!!!!!!!!! Baby is doing fine. He's not as groggy as I thought he might be. The difficult part is keeping him from jumping and chewing or scratching at his stitches. Most of his stomach is shaved-so I'm sure that itches, too. The vets' office did loan us an "e-collar" to keep him from getting at his stitches. He really is being a good sport about wearing it. I just hate putting it on him because it does not look comfortable. I think it would be hot, too, especially with his ears all shoved up in his face. He gets hung-up on and bumps into things. He's reminding me of the black overweight poodle my great aunt had. Penny went blind in her older years and basically saw by bumping into furniture and other objects, then correcting her path from that. Like sonar. Only different.

This afternoon we're going to rest and relax while catching up on some episodes of Lost on-line. I'm going to knit on the dog bed. We're just goint to take it easy. As I write Derby is snozzing near my left foot. It's comforting to hear his soft panting sounds. It's so good to have my little boy home.

let's play ball

Today is the day. We dropped Derby off at the vets' office around 8:00 this morning. His surgery will probably start around 11:00 (CST). I’ll call the office later today (around 2:30-3:00 to see how he's doing. He can be picked up tomorrow morning. I already miss him so much already! The house seems so quiet. Being here while he’s there and wondering what he’s doing is nerve wracking. He took Bah-Bah along with him. But I'm sure he's having lots of fun playing with the staff. He's so irresistible they can't help themselves.

While we were in the waiting room a very large dog with a hurt paw came in and Derby started shaking in his furry little boots. But they made friends after the usual sniffing. As the nice vet tech lady was taking Derby to the back she said, “Come on Derby, let’s go flirt with some girls one last time.” As he headed off Derby looked over his shoulder at me as if to say, "See ya later Mom!"

I need a sedative.

did you know that only 8 geldings have won the kentucky derby?

Today Derby turns six months old. Six months old is a momentous occasion in a young male dog’s life. Derby is scheduled for “the surgery” on Monday, May 14th. It’s going to be a little more in-depth than the usual neutering procedure. For one, he was born with a little hernia. Secondly, let’s see…how to say this without embarrassing the boy. Um, due to some side effects of breeding practices to breed out the hunting instinct in cocker spaniels some of Derby’s parts have not fallen into place. They are not where they should have ended up by this point in his development. Believe me, he does not know the difference. Honestly, I am kind of nervous. I know that Drs. Smith and Young do this kind of thing every week. But still, I’m a little scart. I need to remember what the scripture that is part of my tattoo says. If God will take care of the birds He’ll take care of me. And He’ll take care of Derby. Dogs rank above birds, right?

cascades of gratitude and puppy sweaters

On Saturday Derby got mail.
Not just mail. A package.
It came from the other side of the country.
My friend, Michelle, who I met through SP8 sent Derby a package that included…

a really nice card
a book called, PuppyKnits: 12 QuickKnit Fashions for Your Best Friend
And some Cascade yarn for the cable knit sweater pattern she bookmarked.
The sweater will be perfect.

I got really excited. Which got Derby really excited and running around shaking his bob-tailed butt.
He got to sniff the yarn a little. But just a little, otherwise he’d think it was a play toy. And we remember what happened with the Socks that Rock yarn.

Thanks Michelle!!!

why does the t.v. keep saying my name?
