never one to half-ass it

I know my daddy might read my subject line and say, "Jennifer Jo, watch you language!" - even if he were to say it jokingly. But I just can't think of a better way to put what I need to put. Johnny G is never one to half-ass it. After calling myself something of a knowledgeable Indy Car fan today I felt the need to be affirmed by my racing Yoda. So, I shot an email off to John asking for a sound byte-a quote-that I could use on my blog to support my claim. As the day went on I got a few, “Sorry, I’ve not had the chance to get to it yet”. And I knew that meant he was putting some thought into it. That’s the way John does most everything. He always gives it some thought and an above average effort. He’s from good Mid-Western stock, that boy (and he’s part Kentuckian to boot). But he’s really is just of a character that is beyond his years. They don’t make 'em like that much any more.

My work day ended and I still didn’t have my quote.

When I got home this evening I had this waiting for me in my Inbox. I ain’t gonna lie, it made me tear up. Can you imagine what he would have written if I had asked for a reference letter to accompany my resume?

Anyone can memorize an alphabet or list of past winners. Jennifer has been a full-time student of IndyCar racing for six years (minoring in knitting). She was a fan – a female fan – before anyone knew of Danica. Her car is named after Parnelli Jones. She has attended races; scaled grandstands with severe back pain; weathered heat, humidity and numerous storms; read books; won contests; intelligently defended IndyCar’s status as a sport (hello?!); cast hundreds of dancing votes; witnessed IRL marriages and breakups (not to mention herself changing IRL boyfriends at least five times); seen both exodus and unification; and mourned the tragic deaths of two drivers. Since July 2002 she could probably count on one hand the number of races she hasn’t at least seen on TV or the Internet. She can tell you a full minute before the fact that Scott Goodyear is about to say "expecially" or "you’re just a passenger." But perhaps most importantly she makes time for the articles and blog posts that hit the Net every day, with the regularity of routine that is required to become good at anything. She is the skilled musician, the distance runner, the disciplined seminary student -- morning coffee, devotional reading, prayer, IndyCar. Even during the winter semesters, she has been my Cliff Notes -- the faithful study buddy off whose paper I copy. I am routinely surprised, delighted, and embarrassed at how much she knows. Though she might not admit it herself, she is now more knowledgeable on the series than this Hoosier who’s been following it for over 25 years. The student has surpassed the teacher. And in one month we will start our engine, trek past her old Kentucky home, and arrive back home again to Indiana for our sixth "500" together. There will I watch proudly as Jennifer receives her master’s degree in racing. There will she drink the milk.

headachy vessels of clay

Sunday, during church, I felt the start of a migraine settling in behind my left eye. I was sitting about three or four rows from the front and, after some eye contact, I became aware of how distracting my grimacing may have been for Pastor Adam as he preached. Our senior pastor, Rick, was with his family following the death of his father. Adam performed an infant baptism before preaching. With infant in his arms he realizes the baptistery is nowhere to be found. I’m realizing this with him as I see him looking around for water. The preacher’s kid in me wants to come to the rescue, “Think Jennifer, think! Where can we get water quick fast in a hurry??” Before I could make a move Bart Anderson was on his feet and by Adam’s side and speaking lowly. Adam responds, “Yes, a styrofoam cup of water will be fine. We just need some water. These are the things that happen when the Senior Pastor is away.” Adam take this opportunity to show off the baby to the congregation as Bart swoops in, super hero cape streaming, with a cup of water. Pastor Adam turned it into this beautiful moment-pointing out how Grace can show up in the humblest of forms. In a modest styrofoam cup and, as we are, vessels of clay. For years to come that little girl will be told the story of her baptism – when she was sprinkled with Grace from an unassuming styrofoam cup.

Following church I participated in a session for people looking for a small group. Along with Super Bart Anderson and Pastor Adam I have been part of a small group that plans to break-off into other small groups. I guess I was kind of a “plant” at the session on Sunday, sitting with a table of women, of which, I could potentially be the small group leader. However, my little angry migraine cells were multiplying like a pile of wet Gremlins and I was trying to avoid gizmo’ing right on the table.

I was pretty displeased about the migraine thing considering I had enjoyed a fairly low-grade headache week and a massage the day before (the second in as many Saturdays). Once the worst of the pain subsided after my massage on April 19th I began to realize that one cause of the migraines may be something that is going on in my neck/between my shoulders not far from the top curvature in my spine caused by scoliosis. Dr. Ray is on this and said continuing the massage is a great idea.

Trying to work through Sunday’s migraine I was going to keep a running color commentary on the Kansas Indy Car race (by color, I mean my girly, but knowledgeable, perspective). I didn't get far before giving up on the “running” part. Between my migraine and the delay of the broadcast due to the LPGA tournament running long and watching the first few laps on-line I only had about ten laps in me. [See post to follow]

monday sum-up

Last week I went on a 4 day migraine bender.
Thursday I left work an hour early.
As my mom said later, God drove my car. I literally don’t know how I made it home. One eye open.
It was one of the worst migraines I can remember experiencing.
I couldn’t speak. I could hardly see. I barfed. Twice.
My doctor started me on more Prednisone (which I hate, but it works). And said it’s time to start on a daily/preventative migraine medication. Thank You, Lord, that my employer offers a good health insurance plan with prescription coverage.

I took a sick day on Friday.
I dragged myself to the 2nd Annual Crossroads Cookout.
I managed to “MC” and am amazed I was able to remember the names of the other Crossroads team members with all of that migraine residue in my head.
We had a great turn-out that included some new faces.
We gave away an iPod Shuffle. Shuffleupagus.
It rained just a little.

Came home crash and watch a bit of the Japan Indy 300.
It rained in Motegi Japan.
There were weepers in Turn 4.
I went to sleep. Woke-up at 5:00 with my VCR still recording. The race never happened.
Postponed until Saturday (US Time).
This was a big deal because of that whole other side of the world thing. And the shipping of the cars and jetlag and a race at Kansas this coming Sunday.

I found a CD player for 50% off at Target! It’s also an alarm clock and I’m able to plug my iPod up to it.

Saturday I enjoyed a massage at Bella Salon and Spa.
I love Bella.
I now love Karen at Bella.
Karen changed my life.
She is a wonderful massage therapist.
She said, of my muscles/migraine, “You were hot when I started. Now you have cooled.”
Exactly.
At one point, laying face down with my head in that massage table head-rest hole, I opened my eyes and noticed Karen’s bare feet and polished toes-the color of a tomato mixed with a few drops of saffron-and I somehow found it soothing.
I left Bella relaxed and happy.
Migraine, gone.
Amen.

Saturday night I cozied up in the living room to watch the re-scheduled IndyCar race on the computer.
A tiny screen. Radio broadcast. Delay.
*A portion of the newly reunited league was not in attendance. It felt like we were back to Red Car dominance. It was getting boring.
Then Danica ran some smart fuel stragety. Helio started running on fumes. Didn’t have the juice to keep the speed up. Danica took over. She won. History was made.
She sort of half apologized for getting teary eyed. “I feel like a wuss for crying. Finally.” Girl please. Cry. Shed some tears. If I were you I would have been laying on that track blubbering incoherently. I would have been asking for my mommy. I ain’t gonna lie, I was sitting in my living room crying right along with you. And our relationship had kind of cooled since you went to Andretti. But, girl, I was feeling the moment. I was appreciating the history. I was loving racing. I was proud of you.

Sunday I went to Beaver Dam where my dad preached for a family friend who is away at General Conference.
Daddy preached a good one about finding our way. Who/what is your compass?
We enjoyed a potluck dinner in the basement fellowship hall. Nothing like a Methodist potluck. Nothin’.

My brother, his girlfriend, and I took all three dogs to the dog park. Derby loves riding in the back of Makfire’s SUV.

*Watched my first and last CHAMP Car race from beginning to end.
The last CHAMP Car event. Long Beach. A guy named Will Power won. I’m not making that up.
Paul Tracy and Jimmy Vassar were there, too.
It was good racing.
But then Scott Goodyear and Marty Reid started falling all over Danica Patrick who just showed up from Japan and arrived in the broadcast booth as the race was coming to a close.
Seriously guys, what was that? You only spent one season with Rusty Wallace in the booth with ya. But I guess he got a hold on ya. Marty: Oh, are we on the last lap?
It was a good open-wheel racing weekend.
It’s good to be a race fan.
And I don’t have a migraine anymore.

Wow.
Wow.
Wow.
Wow.

First, Re-unification.

Second, Graham Rahal is the youngest driver to win an Indy Car race.

And now, Danica Patrick has won her first race!

This is history, folks. She is the first woman to win a major auto race. Danica has won the Japan Indy 300.

(see Indy Star article)

Wow.

That's all I can say. Wow.
This is going to be an awesome season.
I cannot wait for the month of May.

Danica won, y'all! Danica won!

eating my words: 10 on tuesday addendum

Cousin Eric posted his own list of favorite comedies on his blog. And he inspired me to do an additional 10 (see my original list here). Really, I cannot believe that I didn’t put the first two on my original list. Especially seeing as how Empire Records is one of our favorite movies to quote:
"What's with today, today?"
"I don't feel the need to explain my art to you, Warren."
"You bucket head!"
And, of course, "SHOPLIIIIIIIFFFFFTTTTEEEEEEEEERRRR!"

High Fidelity may be one of my favorite movies. Ever. I guess I like comedies more than I realized. I really shouldn't throw the whole genre out with the bath water.

10 More Favorite Comedies

1) Empire Records
2) High Fidelity
3) 13 Going on 30
4) Being John Malkovich
5) Can’t Buy Me Love
6) Sixteen Candles
7) The Princess Bride
8) The Breakfast Club
9) Elf
10) Eternal Sunshine on the Spotlight Mind (is this a comedy?)

No, JD, still no Dumb and Dumber.
