friday candy: father's day edition
Why this is sweet: As a little girl I loved listening to an 8-track "Best Of'" Statler Brothers album my dad had. So, in honor of Father's Day I thought I'd pick these songs for my dad.

The Candy: Knights of Cydonia by Muse
Why this is sweet: I have a new love -the band Muse. If I had to compare them to other musical acts I might say something like this...
The obvious comparison is Radiohead...meets Keane meets INXS meets Rush meets Electric Light Orchestra (Can you say Xanadu? You know it’s a good song. Don’t front.) meets Queen meets YES! meets Phil Wickham meets more Radiohead meets awesomeness. They’ve been around for over 15 years and were a band I had heard of but had never known personally.
Until recently.
I love when a band really rocks with wailing guitars and heavy bass lines and yet still has really *pretty* vocals. AND they have lots of amazing videos. Expect more Friday sweetness from Muse...

Why this is sweet: Indy Downforce, the Indy Car Series fan club/forum/group/cult, has come out with some GREAT commercials this season. Below is one featuring The Iceman, Scott Dixon. This one is pretty hilarious. But I will say that my favorite is still the one with Dario Franchitti (which I've yet to find a video of online).

friday candy: mother's day edition
Why This is Sweet: This song was co-written by Cristina Carlino, founder of my favorite bath and body company, philopsophy. I've chosen this song for this weekend because Amy Grant was my childhood hero, and a very important female role-model in my life. This song is a celebration of relationships between all women - mothers, daughters, sisters, cousins, granddaughters, soul sisters, best friends....

Why this is sweet: It's Derby weekend. That means it's the time of year when the eyes of the world turn to my home state, The Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Why this is sweet: I just happened upon this quartet of sisters that make up Paraousia today when looking for a version of "I'll Fly Away". I know some people may believe that a family sitting around singing songs is something you only see in the movies or on reruns of Little House on the Prairie. But I come from a family that truly spontaneously breaks into the singing of hymns. This was one of my granddaddy’s favorites.

Why this is sweet: How Could I Ask For More is perhaps one of my all time favorite songs by one of my all time favorite voices to come out of Christian/Gospel music. This is a gorgeous, stripped down version recorded years after the orginal was released.
There's nothing like the warmth of a summer afternoon
Waking to the sunlight, and being cradled by the moon
Catching fireflies at night
Building castles in the sand
Kissing Mama's face goodnight
Holding Daddy's hand
Thank you Lord, how could I ask for more
Running barefoot through the grass
A little hide and go seek
Being so in love, that you can hardly eat
Dancing in the dark, when there's no one else around
Being bundled 'neath the covers, watching snow
Fall to the ground
Thank you Lord, how could I ask for more
So many things I thought would bring me happiness
Some dreams that are realities today
Such an irony the things that mean the most to me
Are the memories that I've made along the way
So if there's anything I've learned
From this journey I am on
Simple truths will keep you going
Simple love will keep you strong
Cause there are questions without answers
Flames that never die
Heartaches we go through are often blessings in disguise
So thank you Lord, oh thank you Lord
How could I ask for more

friday candy: a video and a story
Why this is sweet: My childhood overlapped a time when basic cable didn’t include Mtv. I also grew up during a time when Mtv still had VJ’s and played videos – but everyone my age says that. In the mid-1980’s my family had about 13 cable channels. Other than the normal network affiliates the only other channel I remember having was The USA Network. However, my best friend at the time, Kym, had all kinds of fancy channels. The first R-rated movie I remember watching, “Purple Rain”, I saw at her house. We also danced around her basement to Poison, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Ratt, and Motley Crue.
The summer before I began the eighth grade, my family moved to Bowling Green. Not only did we get a new family television that summer, with my first ever remote control, we got a lot of the fancy cables channels that my friend, Kym, had back in Shepherdsville. Finally (FINALLY!) I had Mtv. And it couldn’t have come at a better time. The week that we got our new TV and our fancy new cable channels Mtv began running ads for the world premiere of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” video. It was an event. Especially for my 13 year old self. In the course of a three minute video a new world was opened to me and my musical tastes were forever changed.
I have a hard time believing it’s been 22 years since I first saw my U2 video. “Still Haven’t Found” remains one of my all time favorite U2 songs. Since Tuesday I have been engrossed by their new album, “No Line On the Horizon”, and have been listening to it pretty much non-stop. So, in honor of where it all began for me…

Why this is sweet: I have been wearing this song out on my iPod lately. Tenth Avenue North doesn't have an official video for this song yet. But I came across this bootleggy style video.

The Candy: True Faith by New Order
Why this is sweet: This is one of my all-time favorite videos. As a teen I nearly had it memorized. While you sat in your high school English class listening to the teacher talk about that mysterious roux the cook prepared in the Canterbury Tales I was the girl sitting across the classroom yawning because I had stayed up too late the night before watching Mtv's Post Modern.

Why this is sweet: I've been digging on this mash-up of Bowie's "Let's Dance" and Cory Hart's "I Wear My Sunglasses At Night" (with a few extras thrown in) by my cousin's band, KNAPSACKHEROES!. Here is a video of K! performing live in Nashville.

Why this is sweet: I was feeling it was time for another Over the Rhine song. This video was made by a very talented fan who goes by the name of Fly.

Why this is sweet: This is probably my favorite song at the moment. And the video does that cool recorded in one speed played back in another speed so it looks like everyone is lip syncing in slow motion thing that I've always been partial to.
But I especially want you to note the lyrics. There are several references in both the Old and New Testaments of the mountains falling and the skies being rolled back. I love how Brooke illustrates both, in the chorus, as an act of worship by creation. Also, I've been considering a new tattoo that will incorporate Revelation 21: 5: See, I am making all things new.

Why this is sweet: This is one of my favorite songs from Keane's first album, Hopes and Fears. And this video tells a great story.
Keane's newest album, Perfect Symmetry, was released earlier this month. I'm still familarizing myself with it but am pleased so far. Several of the songs have something of a 1980's New Wave feel and that always makes me happy.
