mom's birthday

Yesterday I took a vacation day from work to celebrate my mom’s birthday. For a while she had sort of been bemoaning the fact that she was turning 60. But we had such a great day she had decided that she really likes 60. And, as she told our waiter at Rafferty’s last night, my dad is “a lot older” than her (by three years). We started the morning with breakfast at the locally famous Teresa’s. You can never go wrong with Teresa’s. Good cookin' just like grandad used to make and lots of food for your dollar!Next we stopped at the Hobson House at Riverview. It took us twenty years to visit. But we finally found it! Dad stayed in the car while Mom and I visited the gift shop. We saved the tour for another day. Mom stepped out into the hallway to look at some photos while I was checking out (I bought a Victorian style wrought iron hands calling card holder), so I was able to surprise her with the book, Eating Your Way Across Kentucky, on our way to the car. The sweet older and very petite volunteer cashier was in on it. I snuck the book to the counter and she quickly placed it in a bag. Mom, Dad, and I have enjoyed looking through the book and finding the places we’ve been and the places we’d like to go.

Next we visited Vette City Antique Mall. That place is HUGE! Seeing that my camera was in my purse I decided to snap a few photos.

One day, when I have a house of my own and an area to display things, I plan to expand my Kentucky Derby glass collection. Okay, so I have one and it is from the year I was born. But that’s kind of a rare one because that is when Secretariat won. The older the glass the higher the price, but they are actually not difficult to find. I don’t think I have ever been in an antique shop anywhere in the Commonwealth in which I have not seen Derby glasses.

This was the one thing I purchased. It’s a vintage trash can. I believe it to be circa 1950’s. I have a yellow one imprinted with a photograph of roses that belonged to my great aunt, Myra. And now I have a pink cocker spaniel one! When I saw it I knew it needed to go home with me. And it was 25% off!

Later in the day Mom and I did some investigative work for something we’re going to do this weekend. Then my brother joined us for dinner. Mom made a lovely speech about how blessed she felt to have spent the day with her family and that, so far, 60 has been really great.
