you remember the 'Til Tuesday song, Voices Carry? (I thought Aimee Mann’s hair was so rad.)Hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry
I know this really does not make any sense considering that the title of the song is Voices Carry. But I really thought she was singing, “Hush hush, baby don’t cry. Precious Carrie.”
Then I recalled yet another misheard lyric from an 80’s hit. The lyric…
out on the road today
I saw a dead head sticker on a Cadillac
A voice inside my head said don't look back
You can never look back
…from Don Henley’s Boys of Summer brought about a very strong visual image for me. You see back in 1985 I wasn’t really familiar with the Grateful Dead or the phenomenon of the “Dead Head” yet because I was in the 4th/5th grade. And my parents are not exactly jam band people. No, I was raised on Simon and Garfunkel…Peter, Paul, and Mary…The Singing Nun…. So, I thought Henley was singing, “I saw a dead head sticking on a Cadillac”. And I imagined a severed head stuck to the hood ornament a caddy that was cruising down a desert highway. I really, really did. And with a little bit of embarrassment I admit that I was probably an adult before I knew the correct lyric to either song.

Don't be ashamed... rock-n-roll'ers are not known for either their pronunciation nor for their enunciation. :)
okay that image of the dead head sticking on a cadillac was wicked! and i love 'til tuesday, too. but... have you heard that remake of the henley song? it's by one of those thrashing new boy bands? it's a different sticker on the cadillac. cramps? maybe? can't recall just at this moment, but it's interesting how they changed the lyrics to make them relevant for that generation....
heeheehee!
My all-time favorite misheard lyric, which for a time kicked Tears for Fears off the mother-approved list in our house, is from "Sowing the Seeds of Love." Sing along... "I spy tears in their eyes / they look to the skies for some kind of divine intervention / food goes to waste / so nice to eat, so (misheard verb)."
