From Spine-Health.com: Spinal disc pain terminology varies
There are many different terms to describe spinal disc pathology and associated pain, such as “herniated disc”, “pinched nerve”, and “bulging disc”, and all are used differently by different healthcare practitioners. Unfortunately, there is no agreement in the healthcare field as to the precise definition of any of these terms. Often the patient hears his or her diagnosis referred to in different terms by different practitioners and is left wondering if there is any consensus on what is wrong.
My chiropractor, Dr. Ray, called me yesterday to let me know he had received my MRI report from the neurosurgeon's office. He said the report shows that the disc is not ruptured. But the herniation is worse than it was in 2004 when I had my last MRI. Therefore, Dr. Ray was not ready to suggest that I go ahead with surgery. He is referring me to an orthopedic surgeon for a second opinion. Amazingly enough the surgeon he is referring me to is the very surgeon who my friend, Fred, had nothing but glowing words for. Dr. Mackey operated on Fred's back a few years ago. I hope that is a sign of a God thing. And I need those little reminders because some days I feel like I'm losing faith. I get so involved in me, me, me and what I'm going through and the discomfort, and the pain, and the tingling, and twinges, and the fatigue that I forget to even ask God for help. All the more reason why I need the prayers of others.
Dr. Ray and I discussed a few pros and cons involved with surgery. Over the years we've tried various methods that are more conservative than surgery. They work well to an extent. But they don't have a lasting effect. I keep repeating this pattern. I am feeling worn down by it all. As Dr. Ray put it the "pain monster" is sitting on my shoulders. Understandably, that would affect my decision making. He also said he will support whatever decision I make and that means a lot. Right now, honestly, I'm feeling discouraged. I am confused. And I have to be patient. I am praying for wisdom. Wisdom, wisdom, wisdom. Please, please, please Lord. Wisdom.
So, that is the latest update. The next step is to see the orthopedic surgeon. And now we wait.
