Adair County and Flashlights

Today BFF BeLinda and I discovered that we’ve both recently had arbitrary dreams about Demi Moore. It’s not like we discuss Demi Moore. It’s not like we’re really even fans or anything. The most that may have been mentioned is a red Kahblahblah bracelet. I’m troubled and find all of this kind of odd. My dream was about Bruce & Demi getting remarried (Ashton was a non-issue evidently). Be's dreams involve getting advice from Demi. In one she was the common law wife of Tom Cruise. Demi was advising her how to one-up Katie Holmes when all Be was just trying to do was get away from Whack-a-Doo Cruise. Yes, her dream does sound more exciting.

Yesterday was my granddaddy’s 94th birthday. He was born a week before the Titanic set sail. I went with my parents to visit him at his nursing home in Columbia, KY (where the name Coomer is as common as Smith). I think he had a really wonderful day. But we know that he’s in a lot of pain and didn’t like it when anyone ended the birthday song with, “and many more”. Granddaddy is still very bright & witty. He’s suffered a few strokes that have affected his speech. Which is frustrating because we know he has so much to say. But he saves his strength to tell us “thank you” and “I love you”. He’s also in a lot of pain and lets us know that he’s ready to go. We cherish each moment with him. I like to remember his smile and the softness of his skin and hair when I think of him. Ninety-four years is a very long time. I think I’d be tired, too.

After our visit to Columbia I spent the night at Mom & Dad’s in Bowling Green. Mom and I were all ready to watch Grey’s Anatomy when Dad informed us that there was nothing but Doppler radar and tornado watches on TV. (I even found out that Grey’s Anatomy had a knitting sub-plot! And I missed it!) My dad has always been something of a weather buff. You could let him chose one cable channel and it would probably be the weather one. When I was a child he would pace around the house with a radio monitoring a storm and waiting to give the call, “Everyone to the basement!” Now he’s like, “We’ll be alright. Just keep a pillow handy,” and he’ll have my mom hold onto her purse. Last night there were storms north, south, and west of us. We were watching a storm front two counties to the west come towards BG instead of go north like expected. Dad started handing out flashlights & pillows. We stood in the hallway outside of the bathroom (the “safe place” in that house) with our pillows and flashlights and purses while we watched the TV in family room. There was a moment when the storm was passing over the local TV station and the weather guys got very quiet. Then we heard wind and a downpour or rain. Jesus must drive a Corvette (okay, not really) because the storm kept on moving and we never got to use the flashlights.

You guys should have kneeled down in the hallway facing the wall while holding a textbook over the back of your head. How I miss grammar school tornado drills.

Tony & I went to see Granddad today. He seemed chatty. Did you see Aunt Signora and Aunt Delpha? We went to see both of them. Aunt Delpha is so beautiful. She is amazing - 98 and still rocking!! And so bright! She knew who I was, knew we were on spring break, etc. She is so neat.
